What was the Knights of Labor? The most influential Labor organization.
Who did it try to unite? Skilled and unskilled, black and white, men and women, white collar and blue collar into one big union.
Who became the leader of the Knights? Terence V. Powderly
How did he feel about strikes? He opposed them.
What did he want to use to settle disputes between workers and management? Arbitration
Define arbitration A process whereby an impartial third party helps workers and management reach an agreement.
What was the Knights' main problem? They had wasted their funds.
Why? Attempts to set up cooperative businesses.
What was the A.F.L? American Federation of Labor
What group was it set up for? Skilled workers only.
Where did union dues go? (2) Restrict membership, and build up strike funds.
Who was president of the A.F.L? Samuel Gompers
List the things the A.F.L pushed for? (3) Higher wages, shorter hours, and benefits for disabled workers.
The industrial unions were set up for whom? All classes of workers.
What did Eugene Debs start? The American Railway Union
What did Pullman do to its workers? Laid off two-thirds of this workers.
Tell 2 things Pullman did not do (that really upset the workers).
