| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atom | basic unit of matter |
| molecule | two or more atoms joined by chemical bond |
| solid | substance in which the particles are packed together and don't move much |
| liquid | substance in which the particles are close together and in contact but move past each other |
| gas | substance in which particles are far apart and don't stay in contact with each other |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| density | the amount of mass in a given amount of space measured in a unit of mass per unit volume |
| pure substance | a substance that consists of just one type of particle and is the same throughout |
| HOMOgeneous mixture | a mixture made of substances so evenly mixed that it is difficult or impossible to see the individual substances |
| HETEROgeneous mixture | mixture made of parts that are easily identified and can be separated |
| element | substance that contains only one type of atom and connot be broken down into a simpiler form |
| periodic table | a chart that organizes all known elements according to patterns in their properties |
| metal | an element that is a good conductor of heat and electricity |
| luster | shininess |
| malleability | ability to be easily hammered and shaped |
| non-metal | an element that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity |
| metalloid | an element that has some metallic and nonmetallic properties |
| chemical change | a change in matter that produces one or more new substances |
| thermal energy | the kinetic energy of the particles in a substance |
| precipitate | a solid sometimes formed when two liquids combine |
| property | a characteristic or attribute of an element |
| Volume | amount of space an object occupies |
| rare earth metal | similar metallic elements (lanthanides and scandium/yttrium) that are not rare but occur in nature together and are hard to separate. |
