TermDefinition
Lateral Away from midsagittal plane, toward side ex: The ear is lateral to the eyes.
Posterior Towards the back/rear of the body ex; the tibialis posterior is located posterior to the tibia
Element "Pure" Cannot be broken down or decomposed into two or more different substances. EX: Phosphorus, copper, nitrogen
Compound Two or more elements that are joined to form chemical combinations. Ex: Water can be broken down into atoms of hydrogen and atoms of oxygen
Metabolism A chemical reaction that occurs in body cells. Can be called body chemist
Catabolism A chemical reaction that breaks down larger food molecules into smaller chemical units that often release energy.
Anabolism A Chemical reactant that joins simple molecules together to form more complex biomolecule. (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids). Requires energy
Lipids Water-insoluble organic molecule that does not dissolve in water. (non polar)
Cholesterol Steroid found in the plasma membrane that surrounds every body cell
Golgi apparatus (Golgi Complex)- membranous organelle consisting of tiny sacs, or cisternae, located near nucleus.
Osmosis Movement of water through a semipermeable membrane.
Mitosis (Name four Phases) Organizing/distributing nuclear DNA during cell division. (Prophase , Metaphase , Anaphase ,Telophase)
Primary Germ Layers Endoderm, Mesoderm, and Ectoderm
Hypodermis Subcutaneous Layer. Consists of loose fibrous, adipose tissue, nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels.
Diaphysis Main shaft like portion. Hollow, cylindrical shape ,thick compact bone.
Joint Classifications Synarthroses, Amphiarthroses, Diarthroses
Muscle Functions Movement, Heat Production, Posture
