Articulations and Muscle Contraction
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Actin | Thin protein filament involved in muscle contraction. |
| Myosin | Thick protein filament that pulls on actin to cause contraction. |
| T-tubules (Transverse Tubules) | Channels that carry the action potential deep into the muscle fiber. |
| Sarcoplasmic Reticulum (SR) | Organelle that stores and releases calcium ions (Ca²⁺) during contraction. |
| Calcium Ions (Ca²⁺) | Released from SR; bind to troponin to start muscle contraction. |
| Fibrous Joint | Bones joined by dense connective tissue; little or no movement. |
| Cartilaginous Joint | Bones joined by cartilage; allows limited movement. |
| Synovial Joint | A freely movable joint surrounded by a capsule and filled with synovial fluid. |
| Ligament | Tough connective tissue that connects bone to bone and stabilizes joints. |
| Bursa | Fibrous connective tissue connecting muscle to bone; helps move the joint. |
| Tendon | Fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between moving parts (e.g., between bone and tendon). |
