TermDefinition
Homeostasis The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes
Anatomical Position Standard body position: standing upright, feet forward, arms at sides with palms facing forward
pH A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, ranging from 0-14
Enzyme A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body without being consumed
Mitochondria The "powerhouse" of the cell; organelles that produce ATP through cellular respiration
Cell Membrane A selectively permeable barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell
Epithelial Tissue Tissue that covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands
Epidermis The outermost layer of the skin composed of stratified squamous epithelium
Osteoblast Bone cells that build new bone tissue by depositing calcium and collagen
Axial Skeleton The portion of the skeleton consisting of the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage
