| Superior and Inferior | Superior means "toward the head" and Inferior means "toward the feet" |
| Anterior and Posterior | Anterior means "front "and Posterior means" back" |
| Osteoblasts | Small cells that synthesize and secrete an organic matrix called osteoid. |
| Osteoclasts | Giant multinucleate cells that are responsible for the active erosion of bone minerals. They are formed by the fusion of several precursor cells and contain large numbers of mitochondria and lysosomes. |
| Appositional growth | Occurs when chondrocytes in the deep layer of the perichondrium begin to divide and secrete additional matrix. |
| Medial and Lateral | Medial means "toward the midline" and Lateral means "toward the side " |
| Proximal and Distal | Proximal means "nearest or toward the trunk" and Distal means "farthest or away from the trunk" |
| Sagital plane | Any lengthwise plane running from front to back and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into right and left sides, |
| Coronal plane | Any lengthwise plane running from side to side and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into anterior and posterior portions, |
| Transverse plane | Any crosswise plane that divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts |
| Acidity | A pH of less than 7 indicates acidity (more H than OH). |
| Alkalinity | A pH of greater than 7 indicates alkalinity (more OH than H). |
