Parts of the Brain

Parietal Lobe Located in the cerebral hemisphere, processes sensory information, pain, touch , etc.
Occipital Lobe Located in the cerebral hemisphere, processes visual information (color, form, motion, and facial recognition)
Temporal Lobe Located in the cerebral hemisphere, performs audio projection, memory formation, and higher visual processing
Frontal Lobe Located in the cerebral hemisphere, performs motor and high order executive functions
Cerebral Cortex This is a layer of matter that covers the cerebral hemispheres and is associated with higher cognitive functions (language, learning, perception, planning) mostly consists of neocortex
Corpus Callosum Nerve fibers that connect the cerebral hemispheres with each other and the two sides of the brain
Cerebellum Located in the hindbrain of the brainstem, performs muscle contractions and maintains balance (equilibrium) HIGHER functioning- speaking, thinking, perceiving
Motor Cortex Located in the frontal lobe, responsible for voluntary movements
Sensory Cortex Located in the cerebral cortex, it receives sensory input from the thalamus
Broca’s Area Located in the cerebral hemisphere, produces speech
Wernicke’s Area Located in toward the back of the left hemisphere of the cerebrum, interpretation of sounds
Medulla The innermost part of an organ (brainstem)
Reticular formation Located in brainstem cell bodies it performs arousal, alertness and sleep
Pons Located in the midbrain, it is a part of the brainstem controls balance and voluntary movements
Thalamus This is matter along diencephalon of the brain, helps with sensory, motor, and autonomic functions. Directs messages to certain parts of the brain (limbic system)
Hypothalamus Also located in the diencephalon of the brain, controls sleep, flight-flight, eating, drinking of the body and internal and external stimuli (limbic system)
Amygdala Located in the temporal lobe (within the limbic system, and the basal ganglia) its functions are working memory, autonomic control, emotion regulation, perception of threat and, fear learning
Hippocampus Located in the temporal lobe, its functions are declarative memory and learning (limbic system)
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Circadian Rhythm
