| Levels of Organization | A hierarchy ranging from chemical, cellular , tissue, organ, organ system, organism. |
| Anatomical Position | The standard reference posture: standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward. |
| Ventral / Dorsal Cavities | Major body cavities: ventral (front) includes thoracic and abdominopelvic; dorsal includes cranial and spinal. |
| Inorganic Compound | A compound that does not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds (e.g. water, salts). |
| Organic Compound | A compound containing carbon, usually with hydrogen (e.g. carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids). |
| Metabolism | The sum total of all chemical reactions in the body; includes anabolic (building) and catabolic (breakdown) reactions. |
| pH | A measure of hydrogen ion concentration; indicates acidity (low pH) or alkalinity (high pH). |
| Epithelial Tissue | Tissue forming linings, coverings, and glandular surfaces; functions include protection, secretion, absorption. |
| Nervous Tissue | Tissue composed of neurons and neuroglia; responsible for transmitting electrical signals and processing information. |
| Basement Membrane | Thin extracellular layer between epithelium and connective tissue, supporting and anchoring the epithelium. |
