Ancient Egypt

Amulet A charm that the Ancient Egyptians thought had magical powers and brought good luck.
Canopic Jars Four jars that held the stomach, lungs, intestines, and liver of a mummy.
Cartouche An oval frame surrounding a king or queen's name, which offers protection.
Dynasty A period of rule when a series of pharaohs all came from the same family.
Hieroglyphics Writing system used by the Ancient Egyptians which involved pictures and symbols.
Lower Egypt The northern half of Egypt where the Nile River enters the Mediterranean Sea.
mummification A process by which the dead was dried and wrapped in linen to prepare a body for the afterlife
Pharaoh The title given to a king or queen of Ancient Egypt
Pyramid A tomb built for the pharaohs of Egypt during the old kingdom. It had a square base and four triangular faces.
Rosetta Stone A special stone that had the same inscription in both Greek and hieroglyphics that finally allowed For the translation and understanding of hieroglyphics.
Sarcophagus An outer coffin made of stone that held the mummy's coffin.
Upper Egypt The Southern half of Egypt that is higher up in elevation and flows down to lower Egypt.
hieroglyphics: Symbols or pictures that represented a word
Kingdom An area ruled by a king or queen.
Papyrus A material prepared, for painting and writing, from the stem of a water plant
Scribes Officials who were in charge of writing.
delta A triangle-shaped area of soil at the mouth of a river that spread out like a Fan.
Ma’at The goddess who is thought to be the personification of truth, justice, balance and order in Egyptian society.
Economy The way people use and manage their resources.
Polytheism The belief in multiple gods and goddesses.
