plantbody

QuestionAnswer
Plant body The entire structure of a plant composed of organs and systems that perform various functions
Main plant systems Root system and Shoot system
Main types of plant organs Vegetative organs and Reproductive organs
Vegetative organs Roots, stems, and leaves; responsible for growth, support, and photosynthesis
Reproductive organs Flowers, seeds, and fruits; responsible for reproduction and propagation
Root system Usually underground; absorbs water and minerals and anchors the plant
Functions of the root system Absorption, anchorage, and sometimes food storage
Shoot system Usually aerial; consists of stem, leaves, flowers, and fruits
Functions of the shoot system Photosynthesis, transport, support, and reproduction
Stem Supports leaves, flowers, and fruits; transports water and food
Leaves Main organs of photosynthesis; capture sunlight and carbon dioxide
Flowers Reproductive structures that produce seeds and fruits
Buds Undeveloped or embryonic shoots that can grow into new stems or flowers
Continuity in plant body Tissues connect all organs, ensuring water, nutrients, and food are transported throughout the plant
Major groups of angiosperms Monocotyledons (monocots) and Dicotyledons (dicots)
Meaning of monocot “Mono” means one; plant has one cotyledon or seed leaf
Meaning of dicot “Di” means two; plant has two cotyledons or seed leaves
Comparison of monocot and dicot Based on root type, leaf veins, stem structure, flower parts, and cotyledon number
Monocot root type Fibrous root system
Dicot root type Taproot system
Monocot leaf venation Parallel venation (veins run side by side)
Dicot leaf venation Net-like or reticulate venation
Monocot stem vascular bundles Scattered throughout the stem
Dicot stem vascular bundles Arranged in a circular ring pattern
Monocot flower parts Occur in multiples of three (3, 6, 9, etc.)
Dicot flower parts Occur in multiples of four or five (4, 5, 10, etc.)
Monocot cotyledon number One cotyledon
Dicot cotyledon number Two cotyledons
Examples of monocots Rice, corn, banana, sugarcane, grasses
Examples of dicots Mango, beans, sunflower, gumamela
Function of the root system Anchors the plant and absorbs water and minerals
Function of the shoot system Supports photosynthesis and reproduction
Function of leaves Perform photosynthesis to produce food for the plant
Connection between plant organs Roots, stems, and leaves are linked by vascular tissues for transport and structure
Importance of plant body organization Ensures coordinated growth and function across all plant parts
