How do muscles create movement at joints? Muscles attach to bones with tendons. When muscles contract and shorten, they pull on bones, creating movement at joints
What is a molecule? 2 or more atoms bonded together
What is an examples of molecules formed by different atoms vs. identical atoms. Different: H₂O. Identical: O₂​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
Who first observed cells and when? Robert Hooke in 1665 using a primitive microscope
What did Robert Hooke observe and publish? He published Micrographia, showing drawings of cells in cork, plus lice and fleas​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
What does the integumentary system include and what does it do? Skin, hair, nails, glands. Protects body, regulates temperature, sensory perception
What are the 2 main layers of skin? Epidermis (outer, sheds cells). Dermis (glands, vessels, receptors, hair follicles).​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
What do osteoblasts and osteoclasts do with calcium? Osteoblasts store calcium in bone. Osteoclasts break down bone and release calcium into bloodstream.
What 2 hormones regulate calcium levels? Parathyroid hormone (from parathyroid gland) and calcitonin (from thyroid gland).​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
What angle for intramuscular injection and why is it faster than subcutaneous? Back: 90° angle (perpendicular). Faster because muscle has rich blood supply.
What is the Z-track method? Pull skin laterally, inject, then release. Creates zigzag path that seals needle track.
