Anatomy Midterm

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between anatomy and physiology? Anatomy is the study of the structures of the body, such as organs and tissues, while physiology focuses on how those structures function and work together to keep the body alive and balanced.
Why is homeostasis important for survival? Homeostasis keeps the body’s internal environment stable, allowing cells to work properly even when outside conditions change, such as during exercise or illness.
How do the levels of organization in the body build upon each other? The body is organized from the smallest chemical level to the cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels, all of which combine to form a functioning organism.
What is the main role of the skeletal system? The skeletal system provides structure and support, protects internal organs, and works with muscles to create movement.
How do muscles contract to produce movement? Muscle contraction happens when actin and myosin filaments slide past each other, using ATP energy triggered by nerve impulses and calcium release.
What is the function of the nervous system in the body? The nervous system receives information from the senses, processes it in the brain, and sends out responses through nerves to control actions and body functions.
How does the cardiovascular system maintain blood flow? The heart pumps blood through arteries, veins, and capillaries to transport oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body.
What role do the respiratory and circulatory systems share? Both systems work together to deliver oxygen to the body and remove carbon dioxide, keeping cells supplied with the gases needed for metabolism.
How does the digestive system break down food for energy? The digestive system uses mechanical and chemical processes to turn food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by cells.
Why is the endocrine system essential for long-term regulation? The endocrine system releases hormones that control growth, metabolism, and reproduction, helping maintain balance and coordinate body activities over time.
