Weeks 1-5 Anatomy Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Dermoepidermal junction | the area where the epidermis meets the dermis acting as a strong anchor between the two layers of skin. AKA basement membrane zone. |
| Outer root sheath | An extension of the epidermis that directly encloses the hair root |
| Medulla | The inner most portion of the hair that is comprised of large epithelial cells and air spaces. |
| Hypodermis | The subcutaneous layer deep to the dermis; functions to insulate, stores energy, protects and cushions, anchors; No vascularization |
| Tight junction | A cellular junction that prevents molecules from passing between epithelial cells; Located below the apical region of the epithelial cells; Deep to the microvilli |
| Desmoplakin | The cytoplasmic protein fiber that connects desmosomes; a structural anchor (Resembles fibers in the dermal layer) |
| Dermal layer | Thick middle layer of skin that provides strength, flexibility, and structure to the body. Corresponds to leather hydes from animals. |
| Gap junctions | Tunnel-like junctions in the lateral membranes of adjacent epithelial cells. In the dermal layer, near fibers. |
| Mechanoreceptors | Specialized sensory receptors in the skin responsible for detecting touch, pressure, and vibration. Circular organelle in the dermis. |
| Anchoring junctions | Tissues under mechanical stress which provide strong physical stability by connecting cells to each other and the cytoskeleton. |
