What is the cell theory? The cell theory states that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and new cells come from existing cells.
What is the main function of mitochondria? Mitochondria are the “powerhouses” of the cell, producing ATP for energy.
What is the main function of the skin? skin protects the body, helps regulate temperature, prevents dehydration, and provides sensory information.
What are the three main layers of the skin? Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis
What are the two main divisions of the skeletal system? The axial skeleton (skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage) and the appendicular skeleton (limbs and girdles).
What are the main functions of the skeletal system? Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and blood cell formation (hematopoiesis).
What are the four major tissue types? Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.
What is the main function of epithelial tissue? Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands for secretion and protection.
What is active transport? It’s the movement of molecules across the membrane using ATP energy, often against the concentration gradient.
What is mitosis? Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells for growth and repair.
What is the function of the nucleus? The nucleus controls cell activities and contains the genetic material (DNA).
What process allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to move across the cell membrane? Diffusion allows these gases to move from areas of higher to lower concentration.
What is the role of melanocytes? Melanocytes produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color and protection from UV radiation.
