| Proximal | closer to the point of attachment or to the trunk of the body |
| Distal | farther from the point of attachment or from the trunk |
| Osteon | The structural unit of compact bone; made up of concentric layers called lamellae |
| Epithelial Tissue | Tissue that covers body surfaces and lines organs or cavities |
| Connective tissue | Tissue that supports, protects, and binds other tissues |
| Axial skeleton | The part of the skeleton forming the bodys central axis (skull, spine, ribs) |
| Stratum basale | Deepest layer of the epidermis where new skin cells are produced |
| Origin (muscle term) | The fixed point where a muscle attaches to the bone; doesn't move during contraction |
| Periosteum | The tough outer covering of a bone that contains nerves and blood vessels |
| Anatomical position | Standard body stance; standing upright, facing forward, palms forward. |
