Human Anatomy Weeks 1-7

TermDefinition
Proximal closer to the point of attachment or to the trunk of the body
Distal farther from the point of attachment or from the trunk
Osteon The structural unit of compact bone; made up of concentric layers called lamellae
Epithelial Tissue Tissue that covers body surfaces and lines organs or cavities
Connective tissue Tissue that supports, protects, and binds other tissues
Axial skeleton The part of the skeleton forming the bodys central axis (skull, spine, ribs)
Stratum basale Deepest layer of the epidermis where new skin cells are produced
Origin (muscle term) The fixed point where a muscle attaches to the bone; doesn't move during contraction
Periosteum The tough outer covering of a bone that contains nerves and blood vessels
Anatomical position Standard body stance; standing upright, facing forward, palms forward.
