What are the four most abundant elements in the human body? Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Nitrogen (N)
What is the difference between an ionic bond and a covalent bond? In an ionic bond, electrons are transferred between atoms. In a covalent bond electrons are shared between atoms.
What is the main function of the mitochondria? The mitochondria produce ATP (energy) through cellular respiration - often called the "powerhouse of the cell."
What is the function of the Golgi Apparatus? It modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other cell parts.
What structure controls what enters and leaves the cell? The plasma (cell) membrane, which is selectively permeable and made mostly of a phospholipid bilayer.
What are the two main layers of the skin? The epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer).
What pigment gives skin its color, and what cells produce it? Melanin, produced by melanocytes in the epidermis.
Which layer of the epidermis contains dividing cells responsible for growth? The stratum basale (also called the basal layer or stratum germinativum).
What are the two main divisions of the skeletal system? The axial skeleton (skull, spine, ribs, sternum) and the appendicular skeleton (limbs and girdles).
What is the purpose of red bone marrow? It is the site of hematopoiesis - the production of blood cells.
