| lateral | away from middle / side |
| proximal | a part of the body that is closer to the center of the body than another part |
| distal | a part of the body that is farther away from the center of the body than another par |
| coronal/frontal plane | A vertical plane running from side to side; divides the body or any of its parts into anterior and posterior portions |
| sagittal plane | A vertical plane running from front to back; divides the body or any of its parts into right and left sides |
| axial/transverse plane | A horizontal plane; divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts |
| dorsal cavity | the largest compartments of the body |
| ventral cavity | a body cavity in the anterior aspect of the human body, comprising the thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity |
| cranial cavity | Formed by the cranial bones and holds the brain. Vertebral canal. Formed by the vertebrae and contains the spinal cord. Thoracic cavity. |
| thoracic cavity | a space in your chest that contains organs, blood vessels, nerves and other important body structures |
| pelvic cavity | the cavity within the bones of the pelvis |
| abdominal cavity | The cavity within the abdomen that contains the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, and kidneys, and the lower part of the esophagus |
