TermDefinition
Keratin These are the cells, arranged in a distinct strata, or layers, are the most important cells in the epidermis. They are organized in distinct layers, and these cells make up over 90% of the epidermis and serve as its main structural component.
Compact Bone Tissue This concept forms the hard outer shell of a bone, is organized into structural units called osteons, or Haversian systems. Within these units, bone cells known as osteocytes occupy small spaces called lacunae.
Enzymes These are proteins that have chemical properties of proteins. They are usually tertiary or quaternary proteins of complex shape. Often, their molecules contain a nonprotein part called a cofactor.
Epithelial tissue This kind of tissue covers, and protects body surfaces. This lines body cavities and hollow organs. Its structure is that these cells are tightly packed together, and has little space between them, which creates effective protective barriers.
Connective Tissue This kind of tissue, its function is supporting the body and its organs, connects and binds body parts together. Materials are being transported throughout the body, and it serves as protecting the body from foreign invaders.
Melanocytes This is a type of cell that its function is producing pigment that gives color to the skin. This reduces the UV light penetration into the deeper layers of the skin, and that it helps protect underlying tissues.
Catabolism This chemical reaction is the one that breaks down large food molecules into smaller units, and during the process, it releases energy.
Golgi Apparatus This is a membranous organelle that is made up of individual sacs or cistern, they are stacked on top of each other and they are located near the nucleus.
Nucleus This is one of the largest structure in a cell and is usually found in the middle portion of the cell. The shape is spherical and it is enclosed by two membranes.
Glycolysis The kind of metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose.
Nervous Tissue This is considered the most complex tissue in the body and it communicates between different parts of the body. This tissue integrates activities of body systems.
