Anatomy Weeks 1-5

TermDefinition
Anatomy The study of the structure and relationships among body parts.
Physiology The study of the functions of body structures, how they work.
Chemical Bond The force that holds atoms together in molecules (e.g. covalent, ionic bonds).
Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane) The selectively permeable barrier that regulates what enters and exits the cell; composed of a lipid bilayer with embedded proteins.
Osmosis The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane, from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration.
Mitochondria Organelles known as the “powerhouses” of the cell; they generate ATP through cellular respiration.
Lysosomes Membrane-bound organelles that contain digestive enzymes to break down waste and cellular debris.
Ribosomes Small structures (either free or attached to ER) where protein synthesis occurs.
Muscle Tissue A tissue specialized for contraction; includes skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle types.
Nucleus The control center of the cell that contains DNA and regulates gene expression and cell activity.
DNA The molecule that stores genetic information used in growth, development, and cellular function.
