What does a pH of 7 indicate? (chapter 2) A pH balance of 7 indicates neutrality, equal amount of hydrogen (H+), and OH-. pH indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Less then 7 = acidity Greater than 7 = alkalinity
What are three types of direct cell connections? (chapter 5) Desmosome, gap junctions, tight junctions
What are the principal types of tissue? (chapter 8) Epithelial tissue - covers and protects the body surface Connective tissue- supports the body and its parts, holds them together, protects from the external environment Muscle tissue - moves the body Nervous tissue- generation of messages that coordina
What are the functions of epithelial tissue? (chapter 9) Protection, sensory functions (skin, nose, eye, ear), secretion (hormones, mucus, digestive juices, sweat), absorption, excretion (urine)
What are the two primary layers of the skin ? (chapter 10) Epidermis - superficial, thin layer, composed of epithelial cells Dermis - deep, thick layer (true skin), composed of a thin papillary layer, and thick reticular layer
What is the parathyroid hormone? (chapter 11) Most critical factor in homeostasis of blood calcium levels. It stimulates Vitamin D synthesis which increases the absorption of calcium in the intestine, it has an important effect on bone remode.
How many divisions make up the skeleton? (chapter 12) Two division including: Axial skeleton - 80 bones of the head neck and torso Appendicular skeleton - 126 bones form the appendages to the axial skeleton (upper/lower extremities)
What are the two major divisions of the skull? (chapter 12) Made up of 28 bones including the cranial bones and facial bones.
What holds the foot firmly in the arched position?(chapter 13) Strong ligaments and leg muscle tendons
What is the largest sesamoid bone in the body? (chapter 13) Patella - embedded in the tendon of the quadriceps femurs muscle.
