Anatomy Weeks 1-7

TermDefinition
Extracellular Matrix (ECM) A non-living material secreted by cells in connective tissue; provides structural and biochemical support.
Epithelial Tissue Characteristics Avascular, regenerates easily, tightly packed cells, and forms protective layers or linings.
Simple vs. Stratified Epithelium Simple epithelium has one layer of cells (for absorption/secretion); stratified has multiple layers (for protection).
Transitional Epithelium A type of stratified epithelium found in the urinary bladder, capable of stretching and changing shape.
Areolar Connective Tissue A loose connective tissue that cushions organs and provides elasticity; found beneath the skin and around blood vessels.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue Composed of tightly packed collagen fibers aligned in one direction; forms tendons and ligaments.
Hyaline Cartilage The most common type of cartilage; provides smooth surfaces for movement at joints and supports respiratory structures.
Osseous Tissue (Bone) A hard, dense connective tissue that forms the skeleton; contains osteocytes in lacunae.
Skeletal vs. Smooth Muscle Skeletal muscle is voluntary and striated; smooth muscle is involuntary and non-striated (e.g., walls of digestive tract).
Neurons vs. Neuroglia Neurons transmit electrical impulses; neuroglia support, protect, and nourish neurons.
Integumentary System Functions Protects against environmental hazards, regulates body temperature, provides sensory information, and synthesizes vitamin D.
