| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Extracellular Matrix (ECM) | A non-living material secreted by cells in connective tissue; provides structural and biochemical support. |
| Epithelial Tissue Characteristics | Avascular, regenerates easily, tightly packed cells, and forms protective layers or linings. |
| Simple vs. Stratified Epithelium | Simple epithelium has one layer of cells (for absorption/secretion); stratified has multiple layers (for protection). |
| Transitional Epithelium | A type of stratified epithelium found in the urinary bladder, capable of stretching and changing shape. |
| Areolar Connective Tissue | A loose connective tissue that cushions organs and provides elasticity; found beneath the skin and around blood vessels. |
| Dense Regular Connective Tissue | Composed of tightly packed collagen fibers aligned in one direction; forms tendons and ligaments. |
| Hyaline Cartilage | The most common type of cartilage; provides smooth surfaces for movement at joints and supports respiratory structures. |
| Osseous Tissue (Bone) | A hard, dense connective tissue that forms the skeleton; contains osteocytes in lacunae. |
| Skeletal vs. Smooth Muscle | Skeletal muscle is voluntary and striated; smooth muscle is involuntary and non-striated (e.g., walls of digestive tract). |
| Neurons vs. Neuroglia | Neurons transmit electrical impulses; neuroglia support, protect, and nourish neurons. |
| Integumentary System Functions | Protects against environmental hazards, regulates body temperature, provides sensory information, and synthesizes vitamin D. |
