Interactionist view of crime Crime and laws reflect opinions and preferences of those with social power

Types of courts Appellate - looks at legal errors/reviews decision of lower court Specialty- Rehabilitates and prevents repeat offenses rather than punishment Municipal- Local/city level cases. Minor crimes
Crime Control Perspective Punishments to deter crimes. The more efficient the system is the less crimes are committed. The Justice system is to investigate apprehend and punsish the guilty, not help
Due Process Perspective The accused is to be treated fairly and equally

Mens Reus The thinking behind the action of the crime.
Social Structure Theory People commit crimes because of social conditions
Social Learning Theory People learn criminal behavior from their peers
Social Bonding Theory People are less likely to commit crimes if they have strong social relationships like family, school, work, community
Specific Deterrence Convinces that that pains of punishment are greater than the benefits of the crime. The experience of punishment should inhibit future law violations
General Deterrence People will not break the law due to fear of the punishment if caught
