Human Anatomy

TermDefinition
Axial Muscles Muscles that are located along the axis of the body, including the head, neck, and trunk.
Appendicular Muscles Muscles that are responsible for the movement of the limbs, including the muscles of the shoulders, arms, hips, and legs
Flexion A movement that decreases the angle between two body parts, such as bending the elbow
Extension A movement that increases the angle between two body parts, such as straightening the elbow
Abduction Movement of a limb away from the body's midline, such as raising the arm sideways
Adduction Movement of a limb towards the body's midline, such as lowering the arm to the side
Rotation A circular movement around an axis, like turning the head from side to side
Origin The fixed attachment point of a muscle, usually on a bone, where it does not move during contraction
Insertion The attachment point of a muscle to a movable bone, where movement occurs during muscle contraction
Antagonistic Muscle Pair Two muscles that have opposite actions, such as the biceps (flexor) and triceps (extensor)
