Anatomy Weeks 1-5

QuestionAnswer
What are the 4 principal types of tissue? Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue
What are the cellular layers of the epidermis? Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum
Name the 3 different types of exocrine glands. Sweat glands, ceruminous glands, sebaceous glands
What is the difference between atomic number and mass number? Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus and how we identify the type of element. Mass number is the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and refers to the weight of the atom.
What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonds? Ionic bonds are formed by transferring electrons from one atom to another. Covalent bonds are formed when electrons are shared between two atoms.
All proteins have 4 elements they are composed of: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen
Describe the shape of DNA and what it is composed of. DNA is in a double-stranded helix and is composed of a nitrogenous base that pairs with another base, a phosphate group, and a deoxyribose (sugar). The latter compose the outer portion of the strand.
Describe the function of the golgi apparatus. The golgi apparatus synthesizes carbohydrates and combines them with proteins and releases as a glycoprotein.
Describe the function of lysosomes. They contain enzymes that break down "broken" parts of the cell and involved in autophagy to help repair cell membranes as well.
Describe the function of ribosomes. They are the main sites of protein synthesis for the cell and are found in the cytoplasm or on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum.
What are the cell extensions and what do they do? Microvilli - for absorption (ie intenstinal lining cells) Cilia - transport fluid across the surface of the cell (ie respiratory tract) Flagella - for movement (ie sperm cell)
How are cells connected to each other? Either through desmosomes, gap junctions, or tight junctions (ie. skin cells, heart muscle cells, intestinal lining)
Describe osmosis. Osmosis is the passive movement of water through a membrane from a lower concentration to a higher concentration solution.
Is glycolysis aerobic or anaerobic? What product does it break down and what does it create? Anaerobic because no oxygen is required. It breaks down glucose in to ATP and pyruvate.
What are the phases of mitosis? Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis? Mitosis occurs to replicate DNA material and results in an identical cell. Meiosis occurs in sex cells only and results in haploid cells that contain half the DNA from the original cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
