Identify the six features that may be used to name a muscle Location, size, shape, direction of muscle fibers, number of origins, and action.
Metabolism The sum of all chemical reactions that occur within the body to maintain life.
Catabolism The process of breaking down complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy.
Anabolism The process of constructing complex molecules from simpler ones, using energy.
Simple Epithelium One later of cells; ideal for absorption/secretion; alveoli, intestines
Stratified Epithelium multiple layers; protects against abrasion; skin, esophagus
Pseudostratified Epithelium appears layered but all cells touch the basement membrane; trachea, upper respiratory tract,
Squamous flat and thin; allows rapid diffusion; alveoli, capillaries
Cuboidal cube-shaped; good for secretion/absorption; kidney tubules, glands
Columnar tall and column-like; specialized for absorption; intestines, uterus
Transitional changes shape (stretchable); urinary bladder
