TermDefinition
Ligaments Rigorous bands that help hold the various bones together into an organized skeleton
Bones Rigid, mineralized structures that help perform five major roles in the body. Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and hematopoiesis
Compact bone Dense and solid in appearance
Cancellous bone Open space with network of thin, branched crossbeams
Long bones Roughly cylindrical shape longer than is wide
Short bones Cube or boxed shaped as broad as is long
Flat bones Broad thin flattened often with curved surface
Irregular Bones Clustered in groups various sizes and shapes
Sesamoid bones Appear singly rather than in groups, sesame seed in size and shape
Medullary cavity Tube like hallow space in the diaphysis of a long bone also called a marrow cavity
Endosteum Thin fibrous membrane that lines the medullary cavity of long bones, and spongy bones
