QuestionAnswer
What is the basic structural and functional unit of life? The cell — it is the smallest unit that performs all vital physiological functions.
What is the function of the plasma membrane? It regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell and helps maintain the internal environment (homeostasis).
What is the structure of the plasma membrane? It is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates.
What is cytoplasm? The fluid inside the cell that includes cytosol (gel-like fluid) and organelles.
What is the function of the nucleus? The nucleus acts as the control center of the cell, storing DNA and coordinating protein synthesis and cell division.
What is the role of ribosomes? Ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis; they can be free in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).
What is the difference between the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum? The rough ER has ribosomes and synthesizes proteins; the smooth ER lacks ribosomes and synthesizes lipids and detoxifies chemicals.
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus? It modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for storage or transport out of the cell.
What are mitochondria known for? They are the “powerhouses” of the cell, producing ATP through cellular respiration.
What is the role of lysosomes? Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down worn-out organelles, bacteria, and other cellular debris.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
