What is anatomy and physiology? Anatomy-study of the body structure. Physiology-study of the body functions
What are the directional terms used for the body? Superior&inferior-toward head/feet. Anterior/posterior-front/back. Medial/lateral-toward midline/sides. Proximal/distal-toward/away from trunk. Superficial/deep-near/further from surface.
What is the anabolism and catabolism and how do they differ? Catabolism(cannonball)-breakdown molecules & release energy by adding water (hydrolysis). Anabolism-build larger molecules & need energy, water is removed (dehydration synthesis)
How does the number of H+ ions affect the pH? H+ up = pH down (acidic) H+ down = pH up (alkaline)
What are the organelles of the cell and what are their functions? Nucleus-control center. Ribosomes-synthesize proteins. ER-passageway for proteins (rough, have ribosomes). Golgi apparatus-shapes and packages proteins. Lysosome-clean up crew. Mitochondria-power house (energy).
What are the four types of tissue? Epitheleal (skin). Connective (bones). Muscle (muscle/heart). Nervous (nerves/brain).
What is the most abundant protein in the body? Collagen
What are the skin layers and sublayers? Epidermis(outer)-Come, Let's Get Sun Burned: Corneum, Lucidum, Granulosum, Spinosum, Basale. Dermis(middle)- Reticular & papillary. Hypodermis(deep)
`What are the functions of the bones? Movement. Storage. Protection. Support. Hematopoiesis.
What are the types of cartilage? Hyaline-most common, covers articular surface of bones (tip of nose). Elastic-elastic fibers (ears). Fibrous-strongest (spine discs, knee).
What is the function of the skin? Protects against harmful agents. Regulates body temp. Gets rid of waste. Sensation. Absorbs vitamin D from the sun.
What is the largest sesamoid bone? Patella
What are the types of bones in the body? Long. Short. Flat. Irregular. Sesamoid.
