What are the six levels of structural organization in the human body? Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism levels.
What is homeostasis? The body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions despite external changes.
What are the four major organic molecules found in living things? Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
What is the main function of enzymes? Enzymes act as catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions without being consumed.
What is the main function of the plasma membrane? It controls what enters and leaves the cell, maintaining internal balance.
What are mitochondria known as, and why? They are known as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they produce ATP (energy).
What are the four main tissue types? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.
What are the two main layers of the skin? The epidermis (outer layer) and dermis (inner layer).
What is the main function of epithelial tissue? To cover body surfaces, line cavities, and form glands for protection and secretion.
What are the two main divisions of the human skeleton? The axial skeleton (skull, vertebral column, ribs) and appendicular skeleton (limbs and girdles).
What is the function of osteoblasts? Osteoblasts are bone-forming cells that produce the bone matrix.
What is the difference between compact and spongy bone? Compact bone is dense and strong, while spongy bone is lighter with spaces for bone marrow.
