What are the two main types of metabolism? Catabolism (break down of compounds) and anabolism (Building complex molecules)
Substances that break apart in water to form ions; include acids, bases, and salts: Electrolytes
Octet Rule: An atom is stable when its outermost energy level contains eight electrons
What is the function of lysosomes? Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down waste and damaged parts through the process of autophagy
What are peroxisomes and where are they commonly found? Peroxisomes are small sacs that contain enzymes that detoxify harmful substances exerting the cell
What are the three types of cartilage and where are they found? Hyaline (smooth, found at joints), Fibrocartilage (strongest, found in discs and knees), Elastic (flexible, found in ear and larynx)
What are the four main types of fibrous connective tissue and their function? Loose (flexible, stretchy connection), Adipose (stores fat, insulates, protects, and produces leptin), Reticular (filters harmful substances and supports immune cells), Dense (strong, flexible connections ion tendons and ligaments).
What are the fiver functions of the skin? Protection, Sensation, Flexibility, Excretion, Vit D production
What are the four types of skin glands and their function? Eccrine (sweat gland), Apocrine (scent glands), Sebaceous (oil glands), Ceruminous (ear wax)
What are the three types of bone cells and their roles? Osteoblasts (build bones), Osteocytes (mature bone cells in lacunae), Osteoclasts (break down bone and release calcium)
Bone forms within membranes (flat bones of the skull): Intramembranous ossification
U shaped bone not articulating with any other bone: Hyoid Bone
