Anatomy weeks 1-5

QuestionAnswer
What happens to the pH of the body when someone vomits frequently? Vomiting causes a loss of stomach acid, which contains hydrogen ions. Losing hydrogen ions raises the body’s pH, making it more basic because the concentration of hydroxide ions increases.
Why is it better to drink a rehydration solution instead of plain water after vomiting? Rehydration solutions replace both fluids and lost electrolytes, while plain water dilutes the remaining electrolytes, worsening the imbalance.
What is the main difference between anatomy and physiology? Anatomy is the study of the structure and relationships of body parts, while physiology focuses on how those parts function and work together.
In your “cell factory” analogy, what are the roles of the plasma membrane, mitochondria, and nucleus? The plasma membrane is the security gate controlling what enters and exits, the mitochondria are the power plant providing energy, and the nucleus is the manager’s office containing DNA instructions.
What are the main functions of the three primary layers of the skin? The epidermis protects and provides skin color, the dermis gives strength, flexibility, and houses glands and nerves, and the hypodermis insulates, stores energy, and cushions the body.
How has the human skeleton contributed to our survival and evolution? The human skeleton allows us to stand and walk on two legs, freeing our hands to use tools, carry objects, and build things—key factors that enhanced survival and development.
How do the skeletal and muscular systems work together, and what other vital functions do bones perform? They work together to produce movement. Bones also protect organs and make blood cells in the bone marrow.
What are the main structural parts of a typical cell? Each cell has a membrane, cytoplasm with organelles, and a nucleus that controls cell activities.
Why is the skin considered one of the body’s most important organs? It forms a self-repairing, protective barrier between the body’s internal environment and the external world.
What is biochemistry, and what does it study? It’s the branch of chemistry that studies the chemicals and processes of living organisms.
