| Anatomy | the branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts. |
| Sagittal plane | an imaginary vertical plane that divides the human body into left and right sections |
| Oxygen | the gas that the respiratory system takes in through the nose or mouth, travels down to the lungs, and enters the bloodstream |
| Iconic bond | a type of chemical bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions |
| Biology | the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution. |
| Organ system | groups of organs that work together to perform specific functions in the body |
| Epidermis | the outermost layer of cells that covers the body of animals and plants. |
| Dermis | the thick, inner layer of skin, located beneath the epidermis and above the subcutaneous tissue |
| Diaphysis | the long, cylindrical shaft of a long bone |
| Metaphysis | the flared, widened portion of a long bone that connects the epiphysis (end of the bone) to the diaphysis |
