Ionic bond electrocovalent bond; bond formed by transferring of electrons from one atom to another
Nonpolar covalent chemical bond in which there is equal sharing of electrons and therefore no distinct areas of electrical charge
Autophagy destruction of defective or unneeded proteins and cellular organelles using lysosomes
Hydrophobic adjective describing a particle or substance that is not attracted to water
Collagen principal organic constituent of connective tissue
Epidermis outermost layer of the skin; sometimes called the “false” skin
Chondrocyte cartilage cell
Osteoblast bone-forming cell
Osteoclast bone-absorbing cell
Cerumen ear wax
Hypodermis loose layer fascia under the skin, rich in fat and areolar tissue located beneath the dermis; also called subcutaneous layer
Articular cartilage layer of hyaline cartilage covering the joint surfaces of epiphyses
Epiphysis end of a long bone
Hyaline cartilage most common type of cartilage; appears gelatinous and glossy
Osteon unit of compact bone tissue made up of a tapered cylinder with layered, concentric arrangements of calcified matrix and cells around a central canal for nerves and blood vessels
