What is the main difference between anatomy and physiology? Anatomy studies the structure of body parts, while physiology studies their functions.
What does the word “anatomy” literally mean, and what traditional technique is still used to study it? It comes from Greek meaning “to cut apart,” and dissection is still used to study body structures.
How are structure and function related in the human body? Each structure is specifically designed to perform its function; form and function are interdependent.
What is the smallest structural unit of life that shows all the characteristics of living matter? The cell
Approximately how many cells are in the human body? About 100 trillion cells.
What field of chemistry focuses on the chemical composition and reactions within living organisms? Biochemistry
Why is chemistry important in understanding biology and life processes? Life depends on proper chemical levels and interactions of atoms and molecules within cells.
What are the three main components of a typical cell? The cell membrane, the nucleus, and the cytoplasm containing organelles.
What are the two main connective tissues that make up the skeleton? Bone and cartilage
What are articulations, and why are they important? Articulations (joints) are points of contact between bones that stabilize the skeleton or allow movement.
