What are the four basic processes in urine formation? Filtration, reabsorption, secretion, excretion
Which hormone increases sodium reabsorption (thus water) in the distal tubules and collecting ducts? Aldosterone
What is the typical glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in a healthy adult? 180 liters/day (varies by source)
What are the main functions of the digestive system? Ingestion, digestion (mechanical & chemical), absorption, and elimination
Which organ is primarily responsible for nutrient absorption? Small intestine
How does the pancreas assist digestion? It secretes digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, proteases) and bicarbonate (to neutralize stomach acid) into the small intestine
Which accessory organs contribute secretions to digestion? Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
How is acid–base balance regulated by the kidneys? By reabsorbing bicarbonate (HCO3⁻), secreting hydrogen ions (H+) and generating new bicarbonate
Which hormone increases reabsorption of water in the collecting ducts? Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
What is the normal pH range of urine? 4.5–8.0
