ANATOMY

TermDefinition
Injestion process of taking food into the mouth, starting it on its jounry through the digestive tract.
Digestion A group of process that break complex nutrients into simpler ones thus facilitatiing their absorption, mechanical digestion physically breaks large chucks into small bits. Chemical digestion breaks molecules apart
Motility Movement by the muscular components of the digestive tube including process fo mechanical digestion, ex: peristalsis and segmentation
Secretion Release of digestive juices
Absorption Movements of the nutrients through the gastrointestinal mucosa and into the internal environment
Elimination Excretion of the residues of the digestive process from the rectum, through the anus, defication
Regulation Coordination of digestive activity
Adaptation process by which the magnitude of the receptor protential decreases over time in response to a contiunual stimulus
Sensation Impulses that travel over sensory pathways to the brain and spinal cord.
Nociceptor Free nerve endings that serve as the primary sensory receptors for pain
