What is anatomical position? Standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward.
Name the major body cavities. Dorsal (cranial & spinal) and Ventral (thoracic, abdominal, pelvic)
What are the four major types of organic compounds? Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
What is the role of enzymes? They act as biological catalysts to speed up chemical reactions.
What type of bond involves the sharing of electrons? Covalent bond
What is the function of the mitochondria? Produces ATP through cellular respiration.
What structure controls what enters and exits the cell? Plasma membrane
What is the role of ribosomes? Protein synthesis
What are the four basic tissue types? Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
What is the function of epithelial tissue? Protection, absorption, secretion, filtration
What type of muscle tissue is voluntary and striated? Skeletal muscle
What type of connective tissue connects bones to bones? Ligaments
What tissue type lines body cavities and surfaces? Epithelial tissue
What are the layers of the skin? Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis (subcutaneous layer)
What pigment gives skin its color? Melanin
What is the function of sweat glands? Thermoregulation and excretion
What are the two types of bone tissue? Compact bone and spongy bone
What cells build bone tissue? Osteoblasts
What is the function of cartilage? Provides flexible support and reduces friction in joints
What bones make up the axial skeleton? Skull, vertebral column, rib cage
How many cervical vertebrae are there? Seven
What is the function of the thoracic cage? Protects heart and lungs, aids in respiration
What bones are in the appendicular skeleton? Limbs, pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle
What bone is commonly referred to as the collarbone? Clavicle
What is the largest bone in the human body? Femur
What muscle is responsible for facial expressions? Orbicularis oris and orbicularis oculi
What muscles assist in breathing? Diaphragm and intercostal muscles
What muscle extends the vertebral column? Erector spinae
What muscle abducts the arm at the shoulder? Deltoid
What muscle flexes the forearm at the elbow? Biceps brachii
What muscle group extends the leg at the knee? Quadriceps femoris
