QuestionAnswer
What are the major purposes of communication? Exchange information and ideas, influence others and meet needs, build and maintain social connections, Participate in cultural, educational, and professional context.
How are speech, language, and communication similar and different? Speech refers to how we produce different sounds, while language refers toa rule-based system if symbols used to share meaning. Communication refers to exchanging information using verbal and nonverbal means.
What is the difference between a difference and a disorder? A difference is a normal, expected variation related to culture or language background. While a disorder is an unexpected variation that interferes with a person's ability to share information effectively.
How do impairment, disorder, and disability relate to one another? Impairment is a problem with a body structure or function, A disorder is a limitation in daily activities caused by an impairment. A disability is a need for support to engage in daily activities secondary to a disorder.
How do culture and language shape the way communication is identified and experienced? We develop our expectations of what is normal/ typical and what is abnormal/atypical based on what we are exposed to, grow up around, and experience. These cultural norms shape how differences and difficulties are perceived and reported.
What are the examples of congenital and acquired causes of communication disorders? Congenital conditions grow with them throughout their life, such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome, or autism. Acquired conditions come after skills are already there and are then lost because of a stroke or traumatic brain injuries.
