What is the smallest structural and functional unit of life? The cell - it performs all basic life functions such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
What are the four main types of tissue in the human body? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.
What are the three main layers of the skin and where are they located? The epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer), and hypodermis (deepest layer made of fat and connective tissue).
What type of cells make up most of the epidermis? Keratinocytes - which produce keratin to strengthen and waterproof the skin.
What are the five layers of the epidermis, from deepest to most superficial? Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum.
What are the two main layers of the dermis? The papillary layer (contains capillaries and nerve endings) and the reticular layer (deeper, thicker layer with collagen and elastic fibers)
What are the major functions of the skeletal system? Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and blood cell production in the bone marrow.
What are the two main divisions of the skeleton? The axial skeleton (skull, vertebral column, and rib cage) and the appendicular skeleton (limbs).
What is the structural unit of compact bone called? The osteon - made up of concentric rings called lamellae surrounding a central canal.
What are long bones, and where are they found? Long bones are longer than they are wide and support movement (the femur, tibia, humerus, and radius)
