Anatomy- cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nerve Cells | Structure- surface that is sensitive to stimuli, long extensions Function- detect changes in internal/external environment, transmit nerve impulses from one part of the body to another. |
| Muscle Cells | Structure- elongated, threadlike contain tiny fibers that slide together forcefully Function- contract to allow movement of body parts |
| Red Blood Cells | Structure- contain hemoglobin, a red pigment that attracts, then releases, oxygen Function- transport oxygen in the bloodstream (from lungs to other parts of the body) |
| Gland Cells | Structure- contain sacs that release a secretion to the outside of the cell Function- release substances such as hormones, enzymes, mucus, and sweat |
| Immune Cells | Structure- (some) outer membrane that engulfs other cells, (some) manufacture antibodies, (some) destroy other cells Function- recognize & destroy non-self cells ex: cancer cells |
| Membranous Organelles | plasma membrane ER golgi apparatus vesicle lysosome peroxisomes mitochondria neucleus |
| Non membranous Organelles | Ribosomes proteasomes cytoskeleton centrosomes microvilli cilia/flagella nucleolus |
| Plasma Membrane | boundary of the cell, protein molecules preform various function: marks that id's cell of each person, receptor molecules for certain hormones, transport mechanism |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | ribosomes attach to rough ER synthesis polypeptides, synthesize integral membrane proteins, membrane lipids in cell membrane, steroid hormones, detoxification enzymes, glycogen regulating enzymes, and carbs used to form glycoproteins, removes CA interior |
| Golgi Apparatus | synthesis carbs combines it w/ protein and packages product as globules of glycoprotein |
| Vesicles | temporarily contain molecules for transport to use later |
| Lysosomes | digestive enzymes break down defective cell parts & ingested particles, some involved in digestive repair |
| Peroxisomes | enzyme detoxifying harmful substance |
| Mitochondria | catabolism, ATP synthesis, cell power plant |
| Nucleus | genetic code, dictates protein synthesis, role in other cell activities: cell transport, metabolism, and growth |
