| cortical bone | hard, dense outer layer of bone; also called compact bone |
| endosteum | thin vascular membrane covering cavities with bone |
| Joint | location at which bones or bone cartilage come together; also known as articulation; include types classsified by function: synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis, diarthrosis; as well as types classified by structure: fibrous; cartilaginous and synovial |
| ligament | tough, dense, fibrous connective tissue connecting bones and cartilages to other bones and cartilages |
| lower limb | group of bones forming the thigh, leg and foot |
| osteoblast | bone cell responsible for developing bone matrix by synthesizing and mineralizing osteoid |
| osteoclast | bone cells responsible for resorbing old or damaged bone |
| osteocyte | mature inactive osteoblast incorporated in mature bone |
| pectoral girdle | group of bones attaching the upper limb to the axial skeleton |
| pelvic girdle | group of bones attaching the lower limbs to the axial skeleton |
| periosteum | thin outer layer of connective tissue covering bones |
| skeletal system | body's framework of bones, cartilage and other connective tissue |
| skull | group of bones forming the head |
| thoracic cage | group of bones forming the thoracic cavity of the chest |
| upper limb | group of bones forming the arm, forearm and hand |
