QuestionAnswer
attribute blocks 5 different geometric shapes and colors. Used for sorting, patterns, and teaching attributes of geometric figures.
base-10 blocks visual models in powers of 10 representing ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Used to teach place value, regrouping with addition and subtraction, fractions, decimals, percents, area, and volume
counters comes in different shapes and sizes (bears, bugs, chips) and are used for sorting and counting
fraction strips used to show the relationship between the numerator and denominator and how parts relate to the whole
snap cubes snapped together and used to teach number sense, basic operations, counting, patterns, and place bqalue
tiles 1 inch squares used to help in counting, estimating, place value, multiplication, fractions, and probability
addend a number added to another number. Example: 4+2=6; 4 and 2 are the addends
sum answer to an addition problem
difference answer to a subtraction problem
product the answer to a multiplication problem
quotient the answer to a division problem
inventive strategies methods students invent to solve complex problems (using reason and understanding to get to the end result. Some examples are partitioning and compensation.
standard algorithm a specific method computation that is conventionally taught for solving math problems
unit rate a rate with a denominator of 1 (60 miles per 1 hour)
ratio can be written as a fraction or with a colon (example 4/3 or 4 dogs: 3 cats or 4 dogs to 3 cats)
commutative property of addition a + b = b + a
commutative property of multiplication a x b = b x a
associative property of addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
associative property of multiplication (a x b) x c = a x (b x c)
additive identity (property of 0) a + 0 = a
multiplicative identity (property of 1) a x 1 = a
Inverse property of addition a + (-a) = 0
Inverse property of multiplication a x 1/a = 1
distributive property a x (b + c) = ab + ac OR a x (b - c) = ab - ac
transitivity property x = y and y = z THEN x = z
