Demo-repub Formed to oppose Federalist policies
Republican party Formed to oppose the Democratic Party’s support of the institution of slavery
Caucus presidential meetings of state and local party organizations
Direct Primary an election in which voters choose candidates to represent each party in a general election.
Precinct a geographic area that contains a specific number of voters
Petition Candidates who are not affiliated with either of the two major parties can get on the ballot for the general election in most states by petition.
Political machines Such a strong party organization
Open primary voters do not need to declare their party preference in order to vote for the party’s nominees.
Candidate Someone running in the election
Prohibitionist single issue party. formed in 1872, wanted to ban the sale of alcohol
Ward Several geographically connected precincts make up a larger election unit
Populist create a coalition between farmers in the South and West and urban laborers in the Midwest and Northeast
Closed primary only the declared members of a party are allowed to vote for that party’s nominees.
