QuestionAnswer
Diegetic Sound Comes from a source within a film's world
Nondiegetic Sound Comes from a source outside a film's world
Onscreen Sound Comes from a source that we can see
Offscreen Sound Either diegetic or nondiegetic sound from a source we do not see
Internal Sound We hear the thoughts of an onscreen character and assume that other characters cannot hear them
Overlapping Sound Carries over from one shot to the next
Ambient Sound Comes from the audience (background) of the environment being filmed.
Sound Effect An artificially created sound that has a definitive function in telling the story
Foley Sound Created by Foley artists in a studio using props & equipment to stimulate sound.
