bariatric referring to patients with obesity
cardiac arrest / full arrest when the heart stops beating
chronic long-developing syndrome or disease
edema medical word for swelling
epilepsy a medical term for seizure disorder
geriatric relating to the elderly population
neuropathy nerve damage that causes symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness
NSAID medicines that treat inflammation
pediatric referring to infants, children, or adolescents
postictal period of recovery after a seizure, during which a person may be confused, drowsy, or forgetful
pulse oximetry (SpO2) percentage of blood saturated with oxygen
respiration medical term. that is used interchangeably with "breathing"
rigor stiffening of muscles after death
stoma an opening through the skin
stridor high-pitched, noisy sound during breathing that signals a partial airway obstruction
stroke disruption in blood flow to the brain
superficial closer to or on the skin
syncope temporary loss of consciousness or fainting
LOC acronym for "loss of consciousness"
TBI acronym for "traumatic brain injury"
thrombus blood clot

tripod position stance where a person leans forward; sign of respiratory distress
amputation an injury in which a part of the body is completely severed
atraumatic without injury or trauma
cervical spine portion of the vertebral column consisting of the neck
contusion bruise from an injury that causes bleeding beneath the skin
crepitus grating or grinding sensation or sound caused by fractured bone ends or joints rubbing together
entrapment to be caught (trapped) within a vehicle, room, or container with no way out or to have a limb or other body part trapped
femur thighbone
hematoma mass of blood that has collected within damaged tissue beneath the skin or in a body cavity
hemorrhage bleeding
laceration a deep, jagged cut in the skin
mandible bone of the lower jaw
mechanism of injury AKA: MOI; forces or energy applied to the body that cause injury
multisystem trauma trauma that affects more than one body system
penetrating trauma injury caused by objects such as knives and bullets, that pierce the surface of the body and damage internal tissues and organs
rule of nines system that assigns percentages to the sections of the body, allowing calculation of the amount of skin surface involved in a burn
structure fire fire in a house, apartment building, office, school, plant, warehouse, or other building
superficial closer to or on the skin
tourniquet a device for stopping the flow of blood through a vein or artery, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage.
traumatic brain injury AKA TBI; traumatic insult to the brain
vertebrae bones of the vertebral column (neck and back)
abruptio placentae premature separation of the placenta from the wall of the uterus
amniotic sac fluid-filled, baglike membrane in which the fetus develops
APGAR score scoring system for assessing the status of a newborn that assigns a number value to the five areas (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respirations)
birth canal medical term referring to the vagina and cervix
bloody show small amount of blood that appears at the beginning of labor when the cervix begins to dilate
breech presentation delivery of a fetus in which the buttocks comes out first
crowning appearance of the fetus's head at the vaginal opening during labor
eclampsia pregnancy complication characterized by acute hypertension with seizure activity
HTN abbreviation for hypertension (high blood pressure)
ectopic pregnancy pregnancy that develops outside of the uterus
endometrium lining inside of the uterus
febrile seizures seizures that result from sudden high fevers
limb presentation delivery in which the presenting part of the fetus is an arm or leg
meconium fetal stool; can indicate stress in a newborn and be aspirated into the fetus's lungs during delivery
miscarriage spontaneous passage of the fetus and placenta before 20 weeks
placenta tissue attached to the uterine wall that nourishes the fetus through the umbilical cord
placenta previa painless condition in which placenta develops over and covers the cervix
preeclampsia pregnancy complication characterized by acute hypertension with blurred vision, headaches, or protein in urine
prolapsed umbilical cord situation in which the umbilical cord comes out of the vagina before the fetus
umbilical cord structure that connects the pregnant woman to the fetus via the placenta
uterus muscular organ where the fetus grows
vagina the outermost cavity of a woman's reproductive tract
nuchal cord medical term for when the umbilical cord becomes wrapped around the fetus's neck
