Energy and Ecosystems vocabulary

TermDefinition
producer organisms that make their own food
consumer eat other living things in order to get the energy they need to live and grow
decomposer are organisms that break down or decompose wastes and the remains of dead organisms.
herbivore An animal that eats only producers
predator A living thing that hunts and eats other animals
omnivore An animal that eats plants and animals.
scavenger A organism that eats dead plants and animals
prey An animals that is hunted by other animals
chlorophyll A green molecule that enables plants to turn water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight into sugars.
food web shows how food chains overlap.
food chains the transfer of food energy from one organism to the next
energy pyramid shows how much energy passes from one organism to another up a food chain.
