| Axial Skeleton | The central part of the skeleton, including the skull, spine, and rib cage; supports and protects vital organs. |
| Cartilage | A flexible connective tissue found in joints, nose, ear, and between bones; cushions and supports. |
| Compact Bone | Dense outer layer of bone that provides strength and protection; made of tightly packed osteons. |
| Spongy Bone | Lighter, porous bone tissue found inside bones; contains red bone marrow for blood cell production. |
| Osteoblast | A bone-forming cell that builds new bone tissue by secreting bone matrix. |
| Osteoclast | A bone-resorbing cell that breaks down bone tissue during growth and repair. |
| Osteocyte | A mature bone cell that maintains the bone matrix and communicates with other bone cells. |
| Epiphysis | The end part of a long bone; it is usually wider than the shaft and contains spongy bone and red bone marrow. |
| Diaphysis | The narrow area between the diaphysis and epiphysis; includes the growth plate (epiphyseal plate) in growing bones. |
| Metaphysis | The shaft or long middle section of a long bone; made mostly of compact bone and contains the medullary cavity (with yellow marrow in adults). |
| Appendicular Skeleton | The part of the skeleton that includes the limbs and girdles (shoulder and pelvic) that attach them to the axial skeleton. |
