Anatomy Weeks 1-5

TermDefinition
Axial Skeleton The central part of the skeleton, including the skull, spine, and rib cage; supports and protects vital organs.
Cartilage A flexible connective tissue found in joints, nose, ear, and between bones; cushions and supports.
Compact Bone Dense outer layer of bone that provides strength and protection; made of tightly packed osteons.
Spongy Bone Lighter, porous bone tissue found inside bones; contains red bone marrow for blood cell production.
Osteoblast A bone-forming cell that builds new bone tissue by secreting bone matrix.
Osteoclast A bone-resorbing cell that breaks down bone tissue during growth and repair.
Osteocyte A mature bone cell that maintains the bone matrix and communicates with other bone cells.
Epiphysis The end part of a long bone; it is usually wider than the shaft and contains spongy bone and red bone marrow.
Diaphysis The narrow area between the diaphysis and epiphysis; includes the growth plate (epiphyseal plate) in growing bones.
Metaphysis The shaft or long middle section of a long bone; made mostly of compact bone and contains the medullary cavity (with yellow marrow in adults).
Appendicular Skeleton The part of the skeleton that includes the limbs and girdles (shoulder and pelvic) that attach them to the axial skeleton.
