Anatomy The study of body structures and their relationships
What is the main focus of anatomy? Understanding the structure and organization of body parts
Physiology The study of how body parts function and work together
What does physiology help us understand about the human body? It explains how the body’s systems function to maintain life
Homeostasis The process of maintaining a stable internal environment
What mechanism maintains homeostasis in the body? Feedback systems, especially negative feedback loops
Plasma membrane The selectively permeable barrier around a cell that regulates material movement
Why is the plasma membrane considered “selectively permeable”? It allows some substances to pass while restricting others
Mitochondria Organelles that generate ATP through cellular respiration
What is the primary function of mitochondria? To produce energy (ATP) for cellular activities
Epithelial tissue Tissue that covers surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands
What are the main functions of epithelial tissue? Protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration
Connective tissue The most abundant tissue type; provides support, structure, and protection
What are examples of connective tissue? Bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose tissue
