surgical procedures Medical treatments that involve cutting into the body to repair or remove something.
amputation Surgical removal of a limb or part of a limb.
appendectomy Surgical removal of the appendix.
coronary artery bypass Surgery that makes a new path for blood to go around blocked heart arteries.
free skin graft Transplanting a piece of skin from one part of the body to another to cover a wound.
tonsillectomy Surgical removal of the tonsils.
disease pathology The study or process of how a disease develops and affects the body.
aneurysm A bulge or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel.
arthritis Swelling and pain in the joints that make movement hard.
bronchitis Inflammation of the airways in the lungs, often causing coughing and mucus.
rhinovirus The virus that causes most common colds.
skin cancer Uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells, usually from sun exposure.
general condition A person’s overall state of health.
abrasion A scrape or rubbing away of the skin’s surface.
contusion A bruise caused by bleeding under the skin after an injury.
edema Swelling caused by fluid buildup in body tissues.
fracture A crack or break in a bone.
hypertension High blood pressure, a condition in which the force of the blood against artery walls is too high.
thrombosis Formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing blood flow.
sepsis A life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection.
diagnostic procedures Tests or exams used to determine the cause of symptoms or identify a disease
biopsy A medical test involving the removal of tissue to examine for disease.
computed tomography (CT) scan Imaging method that uses X-rays to create cross-sectional pictures of the body.
toxicology screen A test that identifies drugs, chemicals, or toxins in the body.
ultrasound An imaging technique using sound waves to produce pictures of organs or structures inside the body.
venipuncture The process of puncturing a vein, usually to draw blood or administer medication.
treatment Medical care given to manage or cure a disease or condition.
chemothrerapy The use of drugs to destroy cancer cells.
dialysis A treatment that filters and purifies the blood when the kidneys stop working properly.
pharmacotherapy The treatment of disease through the use of drugs.
transplant A medical procedure in which an organ or tissue is moved from one body to another.
therapeutic Related to the healing of disease; treatment that relieves or cures a disorder
pericarditis Inflammation of the pericardium, the sac-like covering of the heart.
ulcerative colitis A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon and rectum.
osreoporosis A condition where bones become weak and brittle.
vitiligo A disorder that causes loss of skin color in patches due to lack of melanin.
lymphoma Cancer that begins in the lymphatic system (part of the immune system).
tendonitis Inflammation or irritation of a tendon.
epilepsy A neurological disorder marked by recurring seizures.
testicular Related to the testicles (male reproductive glands).
asthma A condition in which airways narrow and swell, causing breathing difficulty.
nephrolith A kidney stone (a hard deposit formed in the kidneys).
medical abbreviations Medical abbreviations are shortened forms of medical words or phrases used by healthcare professionals to communicate quickly and efficiently in writing or speech.
afib A heart rhythm disorder with irregular and often rapid heartbeat.
ANED Used to describe a cancer patient who currently shows no signs of the disease.
c-section Surgical procedure to deliver a baby through incisions in the abdomen and uterus.
Diff Part of a complete blood count that shows the percentages of different types of white blood cells.
DOB The day a person was born.
Dx The identification of a disease or condition.
ICU A hospital unit for critically ill patients requiring constant care.
PRN used for medications given only when required.
Rx s a symbol that means a medical prescription instructions from a doctor for a patient to take medication or follow a treatment plan.
Vs s a symbol that means a medical prescription instructions from a doctor for a patient to take medication or follow a treatment plan.
