Cells

TermDefinition
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, s red pigment that attracts then releases oxygen. It also transports oxygen in the blood stream from lungs to the other body parts
Nerve cells Detects changes in internal or external environment, transmits nerve impulses from one part of the body to another.
Muscle cells Contracts/shortens to allow movement of body parts
Gland cells Releases substances such as hormones, enzymes, sweat, and mucus
Immune cells Recognize and destroys nonself cells such as cancer cells and invading bacteria
Ribosomes Site of protein synthesis aka protein factories; small particles assembled from two tiny subunits of rRNA and protein
Microvilli Short fingerlike extensions of the plasma membrane. Job is to increase a cells absorptive surface area.
Peroxisomes Tiny membrane bags containing enzymes. These enzymes detoxify harmful substances in the cell.
Vesicles Tiny membrane bags; They temporarily contain molecules for transport or later use.
Golgi appartaus Stack of flattened sacs surrounded by vesicles. They synthesize carbohydrates and combine them with protein and packages the products as globules of glycoproteins.
Nucleolus Dense area of chromatin and related molecules within the nucleus. Site of formation of ribosome subunits.
